2007- 8 Artist-in-Residence Grants by School

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council Artist-in-Residence program has been providing arts education in the Shoreline School District since 1993. Mainly funded by the annual Arts Festival GALA, the program also relies on government and foundation grants and community support. The Arts Council supports projects in all art forms P-12. All of our arts education projects are curriculum-based, may be pure art or integrated into other subject areas, and are designed to enhance the regular course of study.

Shoreline Children’s Center
2008 Artists Jacquie Bresadola and Cody Adams created papier-mache pigs “Pigs on Parade Year IV” for the Elementary School Extended Day Program. ($600)
2008 Artist Marsha Lippert taught preschoolers pastel, color mixing, and portrait techniques. “Rainbow 'Round Me! Colors of Our World” ($420)

Briarcrest
2008 “African Dance and Drums” All of the first and second graders worked with dancer Consuelo Palmer-Bormann and drummer Steve Roy to learn African songs, dances, and percussion techniques. ($800)
2008 “Art Smarts” Artist Mona Fairbanks taught visual arts concepts to K-6th graders. ($1,300)

Brookside
2008 “Brookside Entryway Salmon Story / Watershed Mural” Artist Roberta McDaris-Long worked with three 3rd grade classes to create an educational mural exhibit in the school’s foyer. ($1,100)
2008 “History of Rock & Roll” Dancer Gary Reed worked with 6th graders to study the dances related to Rock and Roll 1950-2007. Students presented the History of Rock and Roll through singing, dance, drama, and technology. ($875)

Highland Terrace
2008 “Highland Terrace Artist-in-Residence Matching Grant” Artist Mona Fairbanks worked with K-6th grade students to teach a variety of art mediums and techniques.

Lake Forest Park
2008 “Washington State History Tile Mural” Artist Jane Steele-Meagher worked with the 4th grade classes to create a ceramic mural depicting the cultures in our area over the passage of time. ($1,324)

Meridian Park
2008 “Art for Kids” Artist Mona Fairbanks worked with 4th grade students. Mona taught
visual art concepts using a variety of media. ($800)
2008 “E Pluribus Unum” Artists Cheri Micheletti and Esta Modian worked with K-6th graders to create a continuous landscape painting that is over 240’ long. Individual paintings are united to create a whole that is greater than their sum. ($1,200)
2008 “Exploring History Through the Arts” Artist Ruth McRee worked with 5th graders to bring history alive through acting. ($680)
2008 “Ancient China’s Legacy” Artist Carla Peery worked with 6th graders to understand the silk trade and products. ($440)

Parkwood
2008 “Kinesthetic Curriculum at Parkwood Elementary School” Dancer Eric Johnson worked with 1st- 5th graders to synthesize movement with curriculum and he simultaneously taught vocabulary and concepts. ($1,255)
2008 “Coming to America Murals” Artist Marguerita Hagan worked with 4th-6th graders to create six murals in the round on the columns at the entrance to Parkwood.
The theme explored immigration to America. ($1,200)

Ridgecrest
2008 “Anansi the Spider - The Musical” Artist Ruth McRee worked with Highly Capable 2nd and 3rd graders to write and produce a musical based on the African folk tale Anansi. ($160)
2008 “Exploration into the Design Elements of Art” Artist Mona Fairbanks worked with 2nd graders to teach the elements of art. ($240)
2008 “Ridgecrest Creative Movement Integration Grant” Dancer Debbie Gilbert worked with 1st and 2nd graders. The students learned dance concepts and skills integrated with other disciplines. ($1,000)

Syre
2008 “Art Smarts” Artist Mona Fairbanks taught K-6th grade students a variety of art concepts, skills, vocabulary, and techniques. ($1,200)
2008 “Exploring History Through the Arts” Artist Ruth McRee worked with 5th graders to bring history alive through acting. ($660)

2008 Wendy Zieve worked with multi-age students on the project “Music and Social Skills for Students with Special Needs” at Highland Terrace, Einstein, Kellogg, and Shorecrest ($1,000)

Einstein
2008 “Puppetry Extravaganza” Artist Thaddeus Jurczynski worked with 7th and 8th graders to create giant puppets and batiks. ($930)

Shorecrest
2008 “Arpilleras” 10th-12th graders worked with Amaranta Sandys to create arpilleras, a traditional fabric folk art through out Mexico, Central America, and South America. ($280)

Shorewood
2008 “Community Based Transition Program Yearbook” Artist Dyna Gegen taught 18-21 12th grade students with moderate to severe disabilities the graphic arts techniques to create a yearbook that they can share with incoming students. ($1,080)
